Hello! My name is Jose Francisco Peralez III, but everyone calls me "Frank".  A little on how I became an interpreter was I was born in the Rio Grande Valley; which is South Texas, about 20 minutes north of the Mexican border.  Upon entering my university career I decided to major in Music Education and I simultaneously took American Sign Language 1 & 2.  However, after 2 years I felt I was not happy.  I moved to San Antonio, TX and it was there that I found they had an interpreter training program.  And upon the counsel of my former American Sign Language teacher who told me that San Antonio College had a phenomenal interpreting program, I decided to enroll into the interpreter training program; take courses, graduate, and obtain my certification with the Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) - Basic Level.

Since that time, I've been a certified professional interpreter for almost 10 years.  I currently hold my BEI-Advanced certification.  I also hold my RID - National Interpreter Certification, as well as, as the Sign Language Proficiency Interview - Superior Level.  I am currently Adjunct Faculty for San Antonio College, so I have returned back to the community that taught me so that I can then teach them.  And I am also currently a graduate student at Western Oregon University to obtain a Master of Arts in Interpreting Studies with an Educational Interpreting Certification.

 

I am also a presenter who has taught a variety of workshops, such as: teaming, transliteration, networking, sight translation, the marriage between community and ethics, sight translation and also a workshop that I co-present, called Level Up!  I am also a mentor for students to those who are seeking to become certified interpreters.  I currently work with TEA, the Texas Education Agency, so that I can help interpreters that are currently working in school districts who have not yet received a certification, and I aid them in helping them prepare them for the test so that when they do test, they can become certified working interpreters in those school districts.

 

I am involved, as well, in a variety of organizations such as: the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf; TSID, the Texas Society of Interpreters for the Deaf; WASLI, the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters; NAD, the National Association of the Deaf; TAD, the Texas Association of the Deaf; and NAIE, the National Association of Interpreters in Education.

 

My favorite venues of interpreting are conference interpreting, medical interpreting, primary and secondary interpreting, also known as K-12, post-secondary interpreting, vocational rehabilitation services, as well as cruise & tourism.

 

My future goals are to graduate with my Master's degree, and to also test for the BEI specialty certificates, which include the BEI Medical Certification, the BEI Court Certification, and eventually test for their highest level of certification in their generalist which is the Master certification. And once my Spanish skills improve, sit for the TSP, the Test of Spanish Proficiency, so that I can then take the performance Trilingual specialty certifications at the Advanced level and then later on the Master level.
